"To keep a lamp burning we have to keep putting oil in it"
The Republic of Cape Verde has an estimated population of 512,600 (UN, 2010). The capital is Praia. Cape Verde has an area of 4,033 sq km (1,557 sq miles). The main languages are Portuguese, and Crioulo (a mixture of archaic Portuguese and African words).
Cape Verde became independent in 1975 from Portugal. One year after gaining its independence, a tentative unification between Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau was abandoned. During the second half of the 20th century, over 200,000 people died due to severe droughts, which incited heavy emigration. It is reported that more Cape Verdeans live abroad than on the islands. Cape Verde is one of the most stable and peaceful countries in Africa.
