This guide is developed by Rutgers WPF and STOP AIDS NOW! and is part of the Quality of SRHR and HIV prevention programme. In this programme we aim to support civil society organisations (CSO’s) working on HIV prevention interventions and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) education for young people in 12 African countries.

Research have given us a lot of information about the effectiveness of comprehensive sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) education and HIV prevention programmes for young people.  Even though strong programmes exist, this knowledge is not widely used and applied. Many programmes do not fully address young people’s needs or only focus on a few aspects that contribute to behaviour change. These programmes have limited chances of success and are not as effective as they could be.

To increase the effectiveness of SRHR education and HIV prevention programmes for young people, Rutgers WPF and STOP AIDS NOW! have established a pool of local trainers to support civil society organisations (CSOs) in 12 African countries. In the context of the programme, a guide for trainers was developed with which trainers were trained to be experts on evidence-informed and rights-based SRHR and HIV prevention interventions for young people.

Trainers are available in Kenya, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Senegal, Mali, Uganda,  Ghana, Tanzania, South Africa, Malawi and Zambia. By the end of 2015, at least 150 CSOs from these 12 different African countries should be able to benefit and have adapted their programme activities to increase effectiveness.
