The First Lady, Jeannette Kagame, has stressed the need for a level playing field so that everyone, including women, has access to equal opportunities.

She was addressing the annual RAND Initiative for African First Ladies in New York on Wednesday.

According to a statement from the First Lady's Office, discussions centred on women's economic empowerment.

The meeting was followed by working sessions on the prevalent issues that affect the continent, such as women health and economic empowerment.

The First Ladies also attended the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Women Initiative's Celebrate African Women's Leadership that was addressed by the United States' former First Lady, Laura Bush.

In her remarks, Mrs. Bush encouraged the First Ladies to use their positions to influence change in their countries.
