Zambian President Michael Sata has appointed the first female inspector-general of the Zambia Police and a new director-general of the Zambia Security Intelligence Service (ZSIS), a statement from his office released on Tuesday said.

Mr Sata has appointed Stella Libongani as the new inspector-general of the Zambia Police, becoming the first female to head the police since the country's independence in 1964. The Zambian leader has also appointed Mr Martin Mwanambale as the new intelligence service chief.

The two have replaced Martin Malama and Reggis Phiri who were heads of the police and intelligence services respectively and will now be deployed into foreign service.

Mr Sata has thanked the two ex-service chiefs for their dedication and commitment to duty and wished them well in their future engagements.

He has also appointed Mr Peter Chingaipe as the new deputy inspector-general of the Zambia Police and Samuel Nkhoma as the new deputy head of the intelligence service.
