First Lady Christine Kaseba has called on member States of the Great Lakes Region to domesticate all relevant international and regional instruments that focus on women.

Dr Kaseba said instruments such as the United Nations Convention on the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women, the Beijing platform of Action, the UN Resolutions, 1325 and 1820, the African charter on human and peoples' rights and the Great Lakes Region protocol on the prevention and suppression of sexual violence against women, should be expeditiously domesticated.

The first lady said once the instruments had been domesticated, all forms of violence against women and children would easily be addressed.

She was speaking at the International Conference on the Great Lakes (ICGLR) Heads of State Summit on Thursday in Kampala on Sexual and Gender Based Violence.

Dr Kaseba said sexual and gender based violence were close to her as a medical doctor in reproductive health.

She said she looked forward to a day when every woman would take charge of their human rights.

Dr Kaseba said she would ensure that the declaration to be signed by the first ladies in the Great Lakes Region for adoption by their spouses on the declaration on sexual and gender based violence reflected the regional fight against sexual and gender based violence.

The First Lady has since called upon her fellow first ladies in the Great Lakes Region to be concerned about the lack of peace.
