The Meru County Women Forum has said it will spearhead the acquisition of national IDs to prisoners in Meru county. According to chairperson Joyce Muriuki, there is need for those privileged with better positions and endowed with resources to support those in prison regardless of their situation. Muriuki said those in prison need not to be left in the key decision making activities of the nation such as participating in voting.

She was speaking at the Meru GK Prison when the women visited mothers serving terms. According to Halima Mucheke, a women representative aspirant, there is need for providing children born to mothers who are serving various sentences special treatment and without subjecting them to prison torture. "When you sentence the mother with the child that is subjecting the child to unnecessary prison life and such mothers need special care in separate places", said Mucheke.

According to the Meru County Women Forum legal advisor Florence Kajuju, the women will participate in drafting the names of women who deserve to be granted mercy by the president in this year Madaraka day celebrations. The women presented the women prisoners with sanitary towels, foodstuffs and other children accessories for children living with their mothers in prison.
