A survey conducted by Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) has revealed that in Nigeria 1 in 13 women dies during pregnancy or child birth and that in every 10 minutes one woman dies from conditions associated with childbirth.

The Executive Director of the CISLAC, Mr. Auwal Ibrahim Musa (Rafsanjani), in his opening address at a one-day legislative and executive dialogue on action for effective implementation of policies on maternal health held in Kano, said the survey also revealed that only 39% of births take place with assistance of medically trained personnel, and that these factors among others were largely attributed to poor budgetary allocation to the health sector.

Rafsanjani advised that to resolve the challenges, the federal executive council must ensure that the 2014 Health Act which government should have started implementing in 2015, sees the light of day.

He said if implemented, the Act would resuscitate health care delivery, given the 1% consolidated revenue fund (CRF) it recommends from the national budget.
