The Constitutional petition over maternal deaths is back in court. Over 150 maternal health rights activists, including home-based care providers and community leaders, who lost the petition in the Constitutional Court in 2012, have appealed to the Supreme Court.

They dragged the Government to Court complaining that it violated women's rights by not putting essential medical commodities in place for pregnant women.

Two deceased women, Sylvia Nalubowa who died in childbirth in Mityana and Jennifer Anguko in West Nile are used as the test cases in the petition.

The activists, who are seeking compensation for the loss of the two women, contend that maternal mortality is a crisis in Uganda. They want the Constitutional Court to change the situation by giving declarations against the problem.
