The Women PeaceMakers Program documents the stories and best practices of international women leaders who are involved in human rights and peacemaking efforts in their home countries. Women on the frontlines of efforts to end violence and secure a just peace seldom record their experiences, activities and insights as generally there is no time, or, perhaps, no formal education that would help women record their work. The Women PeaceMakers Program offers an opportunity for women leaders who want to document, share and build upon their unique peacemaking stories.

In addition to documenting their stories, the women give presentations on their work both at the IPJ and in the San Diego community and have opportunities to exchange ideas and approaches to peacemaking and justice, increasing their capacity to participate in conflict resolution and peacebuilding efforts and in post-conflict decision-making. As one of the IPJ's flagship programs, the Women PeaceMakers Program seeks to project awardees as experts and advocates in gendered peacebuilding processes locally, regionally and internationally.

Women PeaceMakers Prohram:

Four peacemakers are selected each year to participate in an eight-week residency at the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice (IPJ), located on the University of San Diego campus in San Diego, California. The program pairs each peacemaker with a Peace Writer and a documentary film team to document her story and best practices. Selected candidates give presentations on their work both at the IPJ and in the San Diego community and have opportunities to exchange ideas and approaches to peacemaking and justice, increasing their capacity to participate in conflict resolution and peacebuilding efforts and in post-conflict decision-making.

Qualifications

This is a program open to women who have been involved in either official or unofficial peace processes and who may be working at the grassroots, national or international level. We select women who have been active in efforts to secure a just peace, namely, through conflict resolution and civil society participation that is inclusive and honors human rights. Women PeaceMakers must:

• Have experience working directly in peacemaking and/or human rights efforts at a grassroots, national or international level.
• Speak sufficient English to relate personal experiences. Written English is not necessary.
• Be in a position to apply what is learned and/or to share with others at the conclusion of the residency program.

Documentation

Women PeaceMakers collaborate with Peace Writers and a film team to document personal stories through writing, video and audio recording.

Public Forums

Women PeaceMakers share their experiences of peacemaking and human rights advocacy with the local community through classroom presentations, visits to local governmental and nongovernmental organizations, small group discussions and other public engagements. Each Woman PeaceMaker participates in a formal presentation, in which her individual story is highlighted, as well as a group panel discussion. These talks are open to the general public.

Rest and Reflection

The program seeks to create a space for peacemakers to renew personal commitments to their work and to take time to reflect in a safe and nurturing environment that promotes new learning and an authentic exchange of ideas.

Program Cost

There is no cost for participation in the Women PeaceMakers Program. Airfare, visa expenses, lodging and health insurance are covered by the program. Peacemakers receive a stipend during their residency to cover living expenses and incidentals.

Lodging

Housing is provided at the Casa de la Paz, "The House of Peace," on the campus of the University of San Diego. The Casa de la Paz is a private residence adjacent to the Institute for Peace & Justice that overlooks Mission Bay and the Pacific Ocean. Invited Women PeaceMakers have the opportunity to rest and reflect in this beautiful, peaceful and supportive setting.
